Exchanging Places wins Royal Award

An initiative by the Metropolitan Police to raise awareness of cycle safety around HGVs has won a 2013 Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

Exchanging Places comprises events which allow cyclists to experience an HGV driver’s view of the road and get a better understanding of the blind spots around the vehicle. The purpose is to raise awareness of the most common cause of cyclist fatalities and serious injuries – collisions with large goods vehicles.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Traffic Command are on hand at the events to meet cyclists face to face. They discuss their experiences in having to deal with such collisions, and then demonstrate tactics to give people the skills and confidence to cycle safely

The Metropolitan Police delivers Exchanging Places in partnership with Transport for London, the City of London Police and road safety officers from London boroughs.
