RoSPA’s first Family Safety Week (24-28 March) will include a significant focus on road safety with days devoted to learner drivers and driving for work.

RoSPA is launching the event in a bid to help millions of people protect their loved ones from accidents which it describes as “the top cause of preventable death”.

The week will be launched by Martin Roberts, the star of BBC1’s Homes Under the Hammer, in Birmingham on 24 March.

Advice will be available on the Family Safety Week website throughout the week and each day will have a different theme:

Monday will focus on looking around your home from a child’s point of view. On Tuesday the focus will switch to older children and developing water safety skills by learning to swim. Wednesday will look at teens and young adults, and helping learner drivers. On Thursday the emphasis will be on adults becoming safer drivers at work. And finally on Friday the focus will be on older people and preventing falls.

RoSPA is urging people and organisations to get involved by doing a range of things including completing the online National Accident Survey on the event website, making a pledge to improve their family’s safety, sharing safety advice via social media, and downloading a ‘Twibbon’ to show support on Twitter.

Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA’s chief executive, said: “Many people tell us that their family’s safety is their number one priority. They value good advice about accident prevention that’s not over-the-top and enables their family to live life to the full.

“Finding out about some of the common causes of accidents and the simple steps you can take to prevent them could be one of the most important things you do for your loved ones. Family Safety Week will help you to do this.”
