A competition that challenges young people to make a film to help keep their peers safe on the roads is reaching its climax in the form of an online public vote.
More than 50 films were submitted by individuals, teams of young people and educational establishments – and six have been short listed as finalists.
The competition, ‘In the can’ has been running since September 2009 and has attracted entries from across the country.
There are two prizes of £1,000 for the best film by an individual/team, and for the best entry from an educational establishment, and two runner-up prizes of £250.
Sally Bartrum, spokesperson for In the can, said: “Young drivers and their passengers are at high risk on the roads, but it’s really difficult to communicate road safety messages to them.
“Rather than another campaign developed by road safety or advertising professionals, ‘In the can’ hands this responsibility to young people. They understand how to communicate with their peers and we hope to learn from the approaches they have taken.
“We’re delighted with the response and the quality of some of the films. It is clear that the young people put a tremendous effort into their entries.”
The winners and runners-up will be decided by public vote on the campaign website. The closing date for voting is 25 June. Click here to see the films and register your vote.
Footnote: ‘In the can’ was conceived by Suffolk County Council’s road safety team and managed on their behalf by Stennik, a road safety communications consultancy. For more information contact Sally Bartrum on 01379 650112.
Think it’s absolutely the right way to go. Shall be interested to see the results.
