Focus on public health at National Conference

12.00 | 14 July 2015 |

The Fringe programme at the 2015 National Road Safety Conference will include two sessions designed to help road safety professionals better understand and engage with local authority colleagues in public health.

Su Ormes, a former road safety officer who now works in public health, will deliver a workshop at the conference. Su led the road safety team at Medway Council for 12 years, delivering a wide programme of education, training and publicity interventions. She also enjoyed a spell on the management team at Road Safety GB.

When the Health & Social Care Act came into force in 2012, Su formed an alliance between Medway’s road safety and public health teams, and was invited to become a public health ‘champion’. This initiative led to an active Collaborative Working Agreement between road safety and public health.

The interactive workshop that Su will facilitate at National Conference will challenge participants to think about what they’d like to achieve by engaging with public health, what the barriers to this are, and how those barriers can be overcome.

The workshop will give road safety officers an overview of the public health function in local government, and equip them with the language and a set of tools to engage with their colleagues in public health from a road safety perspective.

Nick Lloyd, RoSPA’s road safety manager for England, will attempt to ‘demystify’ public health and identify how to unlock potential funding.

Nick became RoSPA’s road safety manager for England in September 2014. He has more than 25 years’ road safety experience in a career which includes a spell with Stoke City Council and as head of road safety at Staffordshire County Council. In 2012 he joined TTC Group to spearhead a new venture, Managed Road Safety Services which later became TTC Road Safety Services.

In his role with RoSPA, Nick has written a new guide for road safety professionals which is designed to demystify Public Health statutory responsibilities and, importantly in times of reducing road safety budgets, highlight potential funding opportunities.

Nick will use his presentation to explain the current Public Health framework, highlight key funding opportunities which road safety professionals can access through a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA), and explain how to prepare a road safety submission for inclusion in a JSNA.
