£21m of funding has been given to councils across the country in a bid to promote green forms of transport.
Announced by the Government yesterday (24 May), the funding will be shared among 23 sustainable travel initiatives across England.
In order to obtain funding, local authorities had to demonstrate they could cut emissions, support social and economic growth and increase cycling and walking in their areas.
With UK traffic levels having reached a record high during 2015, the Government hopes this funding will improve lives by offering cheap, clean and healthy travel options, as well as increasing access to jobs.
The Government aims to make almost every car and van zero emissions by 2050 and says it has committed more than £300m to support cycling and walking over the course of this Parliament. It also says more than £6bn will be provided for local road and cycle path maintenance up to 2021.
Robert Goodwill, transport minister, said: “Green transport cuts congestion and improves air quality. It also offers the cheapest and healthiest way for people to access jobs and education.
“These schemes will make a real difference for residents and help provide better air quality for everyone.”

So let me see. That’s about £1.40 per person outside London annually. If the government thinks that this will deliver the ambition within its Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Strategy to “make cycling and walking the natural choice for shorter journeys” then it is living in “cloud cuckoo land”.
In fact British Cycling said that at current funding levels it “isn’t worth the paper its written on” See
