A new campaign comprising educational events and practical advice – backed by enforcement – has been launched in Glasgow.
‘Go Safe Glasgow’ brings together Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, who will work in partnership for the first time to cut collisions and casualties.
The campaign will focus on various safety themes throughout the year. The first theme, ‘speed’, began immediately after the launch with a series of projects in the south of the city.
Tragically, though, three serious incidents involving pedestrians occurred in the city on the morning of the launch – with two women killed.
Cllr Sadie Docherty said: “Yesterday’s events were tragic and our thoughts are with those hurt and the loved ones of those killed.
“By most measures, Glasgow’s roads are safer today than they have ever been in modern times – but these incidents demonstrate exactly why there can be no room for complacency.
“Go Safe Glasgow is a campaign for all road users – drivers, cyclists, those who drive at work and our most vulnerable citizens, such as children and older people.
In October, when the clocks go back, the campaign will focus on older pedestrians and during the festive season it will address drink driving. Further themes will be announced in the New Year.
