Robert Halfon, MP for Harlow in Essex, has won Brake’s ‘Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month Award’ for for his efforts to introduce a 50mph speed limit on a notorious three mile section of the Crooked Mile in Waltham Abbey, Essex.

Mr Halfon began his campaign in November 2011 following a meeting with constituent Mrs Hurst whose grandson and his girlfriend were killed in a head-on collision on the Crooked Mile.

He joined forces with two local councillors and contacted Tracey Chapman, the councillor responsible for Highways at Essex County Council, to urge her to improve safety on the Crooked Mile. He also pressed the local police to ensure that road users were not driving at excessive speeds.

In February 2012, Mr Halfon launched an online petition calling on Essex County Council to introduce a lower speed limit, improved signage and better road-markings on the Crooked Mile.

350 local residents backed the campaign and the council responded by agreeing to lower the speed limit to 50mph and make improvements to signage and road-markings.

While welcoming the decision, Mr Halfon has publicly stated that it is vital the new limit is rigorously enforced and says he will continue to monitor the situation.

He said: “I accept this award on behalf of all the road users of the Crooked Mile and for my constituents who have suffered because of the lack of road safety in the area.”

Well done that man… but wait, that’s what he is employed to do and has been put in a position of responsibility to do.

Well done Brake for recognising his endeavours.

There are many others out there who are shouting out in anger and grief over a lost loved one but their words go unheard.
