Santa Claus is throwing his considerable weight behind a campaign to make roads safer in County Mayo, Ireland.

All primary school pupils in County Mayo will receive a Christmas card featuring Santa taking due care and attention before setting of on his epic annual voyage. The pupils can send the card on to friends and family to spread the road safety message.

On the card one of his helpers says: “Santa, make sure you have Rudolf’s lights on and don’t forget to fasten your seatbelt! Safety always comes first!”

Noel Gibbons, Mayo’s RSO who co-ordinated the campaign (with Santa), said: “Every year hundreds of children are injured or killed on our roads. It is vitally important that we educate our young children of the potential dangers on our roads. We would like to thank Santa for helping us to get this vital message out there.”

Santa Claus is rumoured to have said: “I’m delighted to help out; it’s crucial that children take great care on the roads.”
