Knowledge Centre reaches new heights in 2017

The Road Safety Knowledge Centre has made a record start to 2017, attracting almost 18,500 different users between January and May – a year-on-year increase of almost 50%.

Developed with DfT funding and sponsored exclusively by Colas since launch in September 2010, the Road Safety Knowledge Centre is, effectively, an online library of road safety information and resources from across the UK.

Information is added on a weekly basis and the ‘library’ now comprises more than 3,300 ‘listings’ – a mix of road safety research and reports, publicity campaigns, enforcement and engineering measures, and evaluations of road safety interventions.

The Knowledge Centre has more than 4,500 subscribers who receive the free weekly email alert giving details of what’s been added in the past week. These subscribers also receive alerts from the Knowledge Centre Help Forum which is used by road safety professionals to seek advice and support from colleagues.

Between January and May 2017, 18,491 different users visited the website – a year-on-year increase of 46% from 12,641 in 2016.

In the same time period, the number of visits also rose by 40% (from 17,461 to 24,518), while the number of page views increased by 30% (from 32,253 to 41,829).

March 2017 was also a record month for the Knowledge Centre, and the first time the resource attracted more than 5,000 visits (5,635) in any given month. 

In January, Road Safety GB paid tribute to the key role Colas has played in the development of the Knowledge Centre.

Speaking at the time, Sonya Hurt, chair of Road Safety GB, said the road safety profession owes a ‘debt of gratitude’ to Colas who could see the potential of the Knowledge Centre when it was in its infancy.

Lee Rushbrooke, chief executive of Colas, said his company is ‘very proud’ to support the Knowledge Centre, and to ‘have shared the journey of its evolution’.

    This is really great to see. It shows that there is a determination within the road safety community to wrestle with the complexities of a diverse and continually developing field of work – and it shows that RSGB is delivering an accessible and practical service that helps meet that need. Well done RSGB and hats off to everyone who finds time in their day to access the Knowledge Centre and put what it offers to use.
