Language not a barrier for road safety in County Mayo

10.32 | 28 February 2012 |

Motorists in County Mayo are being given a road safety message in 10 different languages, following a weekend that saw four lives lost on Ireland’s roads.

A screen-saver produced by Mayo’s road safety team will flash the message in internet cafes, libraries, schools and computer shops around the county. The message can also be used as a background image for smartphones.

‘Slow down – stop the carnage’ is the English version of the message, but it is also published in Arabic, Chinese, French, Irish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese and Russian.

Noel Gibbons, Mayo’s road safety officer, said: “We decided to produce the screen-saver in the 10 languages to reach as wide an audience as possible. There is a large population of non-nationals here in County Mayo and this is an effort to reach them with a message to stop the carnage, as well as reaching native road users.”
