CEMEX UK Operations Ltd – Logistics has lifted the inaugural RoSPA MORR Technology Trophy in recognition of its use of the latest technology to cut work-related road collisions, in particular relating to cyclists.

Sponsored by Tesco Dotcom, the new trophy was unveiled at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2013 ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on 14 May. It has been created to honour the best use of technology in managing occupational road risk (MORR) – from black boxes in vehicles to e-learning and social media.

Kevin Clinton, RoSPA’s head of road safety, said: “CEMEX UK Operations Ltd – Logistics was selected as the first winner of the MORR Technology Trophy in recognition of its development and trial of the use of technology to reduce the risks to pedal cyclists.

“It has invested in innovative bespoke systems to alert its drivers when cyclists are nearby, including sensors, additional blind spot mirrors and camera systems. By conducting proper trials, evaluated with the help of a university, it is making sure that the technology adopted is effective.”

Meanwhile, Dubai-based Tristar Transport LLC won RoSPA’s 2013 MORR Trophy. Sponsored by Allianz, the MORR Trophy honours the organisation that demonstrates the most effective and cohesive MORR programme, supported by historical performance data.

Colas was highly commended in this category.

Kevin Clinton said: “Tristar Transport LLC was presented with the MORR Trophy in recognition of its clear commitment to managing occupational road risk at all levels within the company, ranging from its most senior managers to individual drivers, who are empowered to stop or refuse work, without fear of retaliation, if they think it is unsafe.

“Equally impressive was the company’s Driver Professional League, in which experienced drivers in the company act as mentors for new drivers, and its involvement in road safety education in schools.”
