The Road Safety Authority in Ireland says 80% of the people killed in crashes on Irish roads so far this year have been male.
Figures released by the authority show that 127 people lost their lives in the first six months of the year – down 14 on the figure for the same period last year. Men aged 17-25 years account for one-third of all the fatalities.
101 of all fatalities were male, and drivers aged 17-25 years accounted for nearly a third of all driver fatalities.
53% of all fatal crashes took place over the weekend and two thirds of these occurred between 8pm and 8am, with Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning the worst time.
