Mayo children learn ‘10 commandments’

Children and parents in Mayo, Ireland, are being taught the ‘10 commandments of bus safety’ as part of a campaign designed to improve safety in and around school buses.

Launched to coincide with the start of the new school term, the campaign focuses on the importance of wearing seatbelts on school buses and in the car.

Noel Gibbons, Mayo’s road safety officer, said: “Whether it’s in a car or school bus it’s equally important to wear seatbelts. Put simply, seatbelts save lives. Putting a safe routine in practice from day one will make it easier to follow and allow it to become habit forming for your child.”

County Mayo’s 10 commandments of bus safety are:

• Wait for the bus to stop completely before approaching it;
•  Be courteous to the driver;
• Go to your seat and put your seatbelt on properly;
• Do not distract the driver;
• When approaching your stop, stay fastened until the bus comes to a stop;
• If you drop something while exiting the bus, tell the driver, as he may not see you;
• Stand clear from closing bus doors;
• When exiting the bus, look left for cyclists;
• Take all your belongings when leaving the bus;
• Wait for the bus to drive away before crossing the road.
