CAPT produces ‘how-to’ guide for practitioners

The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) has produced a briefing for practitioners on how to engage with parents and carers to promote messages on child accident prevention.

Published on CAPT’s Making the Link website, the ‘Engaging with parents and carers’ guide is intended as an essential ‘how-to’ for practitioners to help them understand and navigate a range of barriers that can hold people back from fully engaging with child safety.

According to CAPT, keeping children safe is a very high priority for parents and as such engagement might seem like an easy task, but the reality is much more complex.

The barriers outlined by CAPT include: conflicting views about accident prevention; the perception that improving safety takes both time and money; low awareness of some causes of serious childhood injuries; the ‘surprise factor’ when young children make sudden breakthroughs in their physical development; time pressures; and not fully understanding the real risks.
