Pupils in Sefton on Merseyside have been learning about the importance of not being distracted when crossing the road, with the assistance of a ‘futuristic’ electric car.
A ‘Mia’ electric van, on loan from France, was used to demonstrate that new hybrid and electric cars make very little noise, and that as such it is more important than ever to look before crossing. The team also took the opportunity to show how clean and environmentally friendly this type of vehicle is.
Joe Morris, from the travel awareness and road safety team, said: “The demonstration has been very useful to show the children that in future, when there are more electric and hybrid vehicles around, they must be more vigilant when crossing the road as they may not be able to hear them.
“Wearing headphones listening to music near the road puts people at greater risk and if we can make them aware of this at a young age, then hopefully this will prevent accidents and save lives in years to come.”

Excellent. Simple error, failing to look etc. are in fact the biggest killers. Simple activities like this will bring the biggest rewards – but this message needs to be taken to drivers also.

Whilst welcoming this initiative, I would suggest that such vehicles should not be permitted on UK highways on grounds of safety (or lack of). The government should legislate to ensure that such vehicles emit a modest noise.
