Free course for Blackpool’s older drivers

Blackpool residents aged over 65 years are being offered a free two-hour driving course to refresh their driving skills.

The course is designed to help mature drivers iron out any bad habits they have picked up over many years of driving.

Participants complete a questionnaire over the phone in advance to find out what they want from the course. The course itself is not a test, participants do not pass or fail, and attendees can use their own vehicle.

Since 2009 there have been 271 collisions involving drivers aged 65 plus on Blackpool’s roads which represents 11% of all collisions over the last five years.

Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for streets and transport, said: “The course aims to maintain mature drivers’ independence while reducing the number of driver casualties aged over 65 years.

“We also encourage family members to ring up if they are concerned about an elderly relative and their driving.”
