The CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety) programme picked up the top accolade at the 2015 Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards ceremony.
The TfL programme picked up the Prince’s Premier Award for its rapid success in improving HGV road safety. CLOCS was unveiled as the winner at the annual awards luncheon at The Savoy, London on 8 December.
The CLOCS programme brings together developers, construction companies, operators, vehicle manufacturers and regulatory bodies to embed a road safety culture across the construction industry.
It works through three main streams: improving vehicle design, addressing the imbalance between on-site and on-road safety, and encouraging wider adoption of best practise through a national standard.
The Prince Michael judges described CLOCS as “innovative, well researched and well managed”.
The Premier Award is the centrepiece of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards, which recognise outstanding achievement and innovation worldwide with the most outstanding examples of international road safety initiatives given public recognition through the scheme.
Winners of the Prince Michael Award are notified in advance and celebrated at its annual ceremony with the recipient of the Premier Award is announced on the day.
In 2014 the Premier Award went to the Video Hazard Perception Test, designed by TRL.
When accepting the initial Prince Michael Award on behalf of CLOCS in November, Leon Daniels, managing director of surface transport at TfL, said: “Receiving international awards recognises the results of our efforts and is clearly a huge honour for our staff. This recognition is important. It shows we practice what we preach with our own road safety and will encourage more companies to get on-board the collaborative CLOCS programme to improve road safety at a faster rate.”
CLOCS is a practical response to a serious problem. By bringing together HGV drivers and vulnerable road users in a constructive, positive way, CLOCS has started to break down barriers and attitudes between road users by bridging gaps in knowledge and simply getting them to see things from each other’s point of view. Engaging hauliers and senior managers as well as individual drivers is crucial in changing attitudes throughout the industry – CLOCS has quickly become mainstream – a great achievement.
This apparently simple but very effective approach has a lot of hard work behind it and the Prince Michael Award is well deserved.
