Brake is encouraging schools to register for its annual Giant Walk which this year takes place on 15 June.
The event is designed to help teach road safety while promoting the benefits of walking to school – and to ‘empower children and schools to make their communities safer, healthier, and greener’.
Brake says 30,000 children from more than 100 schools have already registered to take part.
The road safety charity is urging schools to use the event as a focal point for lessons about road safety and is providing resources, advice and guidance to help teachers plan lessons around their Giant Walk.
Gary Rae, director of communications and campaigns, says: “Brake’s Giant Walk is a great way for schools to highlight the need for safer roads in their communities, to enable children to be able to walk or cycle to school without fear or threat from traffic.
“Brake’s Giant Walk is a terrific opportunity to educate children about the importance of road safety and the advantages of walking to school for their own health and the environment. It is also a call on local drivers to make a big difference by slowing down to protect children on foot and bike.
“We’re urging schools to sign up now to take full advantage of the resources and support Brake offers to help schools get involved.”
