A new resource pack has been produced by Safe Drive Stay Alive Greater Manchester* in a bid to encourage young drivers to extend their discussions about road safety beyond the live performance itself.
Safe Drive Stay Alive brings young people face-to-face with the consequences of a road traffic collision, in a presentation delivered by those with first-hand experience. The live show features real people, including emergency service staff and bereaved family members, to tell their own personal stories of tragedy and loss.
An evaluation of Safe Drive Stay Alive Greater Manchester, carried out in 2014, highlighted a positive change in attitude from those who attended the performance, including to behaviours such as wearing a seat belt, challenging a speeding driver and using a mobile phone when driving.
The new resource pack has been designed by Dr Fiona Fylan, a leading psychologist in the field of road safety.
Lesley Allen, from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, said: “After attending Safe Drive Stay Alive, young people are motivated to stay safe on the roads – but we are keen that students attending one of our performances have the opportunity to further discuss and explore their thoughts around road safety with their peers at a later date.
“This new resource pack helps them to explore their own individual tendencies in relation to impulsivity, reacting to peer pressure and subsequent risk taking behaviours as drivers or passengers.
“Each module guides the young people through a series of practical exercises, and encourages them to develop individual safe action plans for various situations they may later find themselves in. The activities draw on a variety of proven successful behaviour change techniques.”
The pack includes a tutor resource booklet containing lesson plans and student worksheets, and four PowerPoint presentations making it clear and simple for tutors to run the group sessions. The presentations cover: impulsivity, pressure, mobile phones and drink/drug driving.
