The role of technology in casualty reduction will be among the key themes to feature at the 2024 National Road Safety Conference.
The 2024 edition of the National Road Safety Conference will be held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on the NEC complex, on 6-7 November.
The event is organised by Road Safety GB and co-sponsored by Jenoptik, Transport for West Midlands and Westcotec.
The technology session, which forms part of the Main conference programme, will include a presentation from Stewart Fowler, road safety intelligence team leader at Kent County Council.
Stuart’s presentation will cover a pilot project undertaken by Kent County Council to explore how connected vehicle data could be applied to a range of issues – from speed and travel times to a better understanding of freight movements across the county.
Also confirmed in the session is a presentation from Paul Cope, managing director of The Creative Lab.
Paul is part of the team bringing the Safe Roads Challenge to the UK – a mobile app-based rewards scheme which deploys gamification and ‘smart behavioural science’ to improve the mindset and performance of drivers.
The Safe Roads Challenge aims to inspire a culture of positivity and reward for being a safer, more mindful driver.
The third presentation in this session will be delivered by Dr Christophe Bastien, associate professor in transport safety at Coventry University.
Christophe’s presentation will cover a new in-situ artificial intelligence (AI) tool which can compute vehicle impact speed, pedestrian crossing speed, gait and crossing direction, from vehicle profile and bumper and windscreen damage.
The agenda for NRSC 2024 comprises a Main conference programme, Fringe programme and a series of workshops. In total, it will consist of more than 60 sessions covering a multitude of topics.
Around 200 people have already registered to attend the conference, and 24 organisations have signed up to participate in the exhibition which runs alongside it.
