PAWS for thought

A new scheme designed to make children and young people more aware of road safety issues has been launched by Medway Council.

PAWS is a free programme specifically designed to support young pedestrians aged four to 16 years.

PAWS is split into four levels, each designed to assess the individual at a level relevant to their age. Young children learn skills such as the green cross code, what traffic is and where the grass verge is.

Older children, taking the highest level, study for a formal qualification and will need to demonstrate more advanced knowledge including hazard perception and road skills. Medway Council says this is a great way for young adults to increase their road knowledge in preparation for learning to drive.

Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for front line services, said: “The scheme has been carefully designed so that teachers and parents can easily pick it up and use it unaided. They will receive an assessment checklist and guidance notes.

“Once each required aspect of their particular level can be demonstrated, the individual will be issued an award certificate and badge for that level.”

PAWS is free and accessible to all – click here to download it from the Medway Council website.
