Permanent ‘bus stops’ for popular Walking Bus

Permanent ‘bus stops’ are to be installed in Medway to mark the pick-up stops of the town’s successful Walking Bus scheme.

There are now 45 walking routes across Medway with almost 900 passengers, a far cry from the 10 passengers it started with in 2003.

Each Walking Bus route has a start and finish point and various ‘stops’ along the way, but these are only known to participants of that bus. It is hoped that the permanent bus stops will encourage more children to use the service.

Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for front line services, said: “The Walking Bus in Medway is a popular and safe choice for children journeying to and from school and I hope these new permanent stops will raise awareness of the scheme and help to increase the number of children using it.”

Su Negus, the council’s principal road safety officer, added: “Local organisations are invited to sponsor a stop and support the walking bus which aims to reduce congestion, improve air quality and the road safety skills of children travelling to or from school.”
