Podcasts add weight to pupils’ campaign

Students from a school in County Durham have been recognised for developing a campaign to highlight the dangers of a 40mph speed limit outside their school.

The ‘Step Up Ambassadors’ at St. Bede’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College in Lanchester have been involved in delivering assemblies, designing campaign posters and working with the police to conduct Community Speedwatch events.

Their efforts were acclaimed by the high sheriff of Durham at the Shrievalty Awards, 2011, in recognition of their hard work and achievement in enhancing the life of the community.

This spurred on the students even further, and through Brake’s 2Young2Die campaign they raised money for that cause and created two podcasts for their own campaign.

The ‘Step Up and Slow Down’ podcasts, written, delivered and edited by the students, reach out to young people and drivers with the crucial message of staying safe on or near the roads. As well as researching key facts for the ‘Braking News’ section and developing their own road safety quiz, the students interviewed David Nixon, road casualty reduction officer for Durham Police and Alan Kennedy, chairman of Road Safety GB.

The podcasts, while entertaining, offer a serious insight into road safety and listeners are invited to make the pledge to ‘step up and slow down’, especially around schools.
