A pupil from West Coats Primary School in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, is the overall winner of South Lanarkshire Council’s annual Road Safety Calendar Competition.
Around 13,000 children from 112 schools throughout South Lanarkshire took part in this year’s competition. Teachers were asked to send in the best five entries in each year, resulting in more than 3,300 entries.
Alice Wallace, a Primary 6 pupil, won the top prize for her innovative design and strap line: ‘When you’re walking to school, listen for traffic and don’t be a fool’.
She will receive a trophy and £100, and her painting will feature in the 2012 Road Safety Calendar. West Coats Primary School will hold the Calendar Competition trophy for one year.
Councillor John Murray, chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Roads Safety Forum, said: “Once again, the standard of entries this year was absolutely first-class and seems to get better each year. All the judges commented on how difficult it was to pick an overall winner, but Alice’s design was well deserving of this year’s prize.”
Alice said: “When I found out I had won the entire competition I couldn’t believe it, what an amazing feeling.
“Taking part in this competition has made me think about crossing the road, staying safe and looking out for danger. I hope everyone who has been involved has learned a bit more about road safety and feels safer at the roadside.”
On the inspiration for her design, she added: “I always see a lot of teenagers listening to music on their MP3 players when crossing the road and I wanted to make them aware of the dangers.”
