Repeat success in walk to school challenge

27 schools from across Medway took part in this year’s Golden Boot Challenge, with Burnt Oak Primary School being declared the overall winner for a second successive year.

The challenge always proves popular, with schools battling against one another in an attempt to tally the greatest percentage of walks (or cycle rides) over a three-week period. The challenge was held in conjunction with the international ‘Walk to School Month’ in October.

Burnt Oak Primary School in Gillingham once again triumphed in the Primary School category, after achieving an impressive 91.1% walk to school total – an increase of more than 6% compared with its winning total in 2010.

Other winners included: St Nicholas CEVC Infant School (79.2%), Glencoe Junior School (87.8%), Greenacre School (74.6%) and Bishop of Rochester Academy (83.1%).

Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council portfolio holder for front line services, said: “Well done to all the pupils, staff and parents that took part in this challenge. It’s encouraging to see that so many pupils walked to school. I hope they continue to do so even though the challenge is now complete.”

Medway’s road safety team has presented prizes to the winners, and certificates will be sent to all schools that took part.
