Road Safety GB chair to speak at CAPT seminar

Honor Byford, chair of Road Safety GB, is to address delegates at the Child Accident Prevention Trust’s (CAPT) annual road safety seminar.

The CAPT seminar, ‘Road safety – engaging the parents of children and young people: what matters and what works?’, takes place in Camden, London, on 23 March. Honor’s presentation is titled ‘parents and promoting behaviour change’.

The one-day event is intended for road safety professionals, senior teachers and school governors, public health specialists, highways engineers, policy makers and researchers.

CAPT says that while many road safety activities take place that are designed directly for children and young people, there are gaps in the involvement of parents and carers.

The charity adds that attempts to engage with parents on road safety are not always fruitful, and that professionals often feel that parents do not reinforce the work they are doing with children, particularly in schools.

The seminar will provide a forum to discuss these issues and will cover: how children learn and the significance of parental influence on their attitudes and behaviour; what works in terms of engaging parents and promoting behaviour change; and examples of projects that are engaging effectively with parents.

Other confirmed speakers include: Kevin Lowe, CAPT; Katrina Pedlar, Road Safety Warwickshire; Val Male and Wendy Conian, Hertfordshire County Council and Kevin Clinton, RoSPA. Further speakers are still to be added to the agenda.
