School walkers step it up

Pupils, parents and teachers in Medway are being encouraged to ditch the car and walk or cycle to school as the Golden Boot Challenge returns for its third year this October.

Organised by Medway Council’s road safety team, the event runs 3-21 October and coincides with the annual international Walk to School Month.

James Sutton, safer journeys officer, who coordinates the challenge, said: “The challenge always proves popular, with schools battling it out against one another in an attempt to tally the greatest percentage of walks (or cycle rides) over the three weeks.

“Both children and teachers feel the health benefits too and get to start the day with an extra energy boost.”

Winning schools will be visited by the Safer Journeys Team and presented with certificates.
