After 28 years of road safety service with Warwickshire County Council, Stan Milewski retired in May this year.

Stan began his career teaching in Wiltshire and Coventry before joining the Coventry road safety team in 1978. He then had spells with Solihull and West Midlands Council before moving to Warwickshire in 1985 as the northern RSO. His first task was to take over responsibility for the school crossing patrol service from the police.

As principal RSO in Warwickshire, Stan was also a keen supporter of regional and national initiatives and was a popular and colourful figure at conferences. He regularly visited the EU as a road safety adviser and contributed to the work of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS).

Stan’s dedicated work in Warwickshire was recognised nationally on two occasions by the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards (PMIRSA).

Stan will be spending his retirement supporting his local church community and cruising around the world with his wife Elizabeth.

Everyone at Road Safety GB wishes Stan a very long and happy retirement.

Sad that I will no longer be chatting over the “garden fence” with my next-door neighbour Stan. Always valued his sage comments and observations and his dry wit. All the very best, Stan. Avoid cruising with White Star Line.

Stan, best wishes for the future. You have been a great asset to the profession and your expertise and keen eye for keeping us all right will be greatly missed! Thank you for all of your help to me personally over the years, and in particular for helping me survive the taxi ride when I visited Warsaw. Enjoy your cruises, you never know I might bump into you one day in the bar!

Best wishes from all at RSGB.

I first met Stan at IRSO conference in 2000 at Tullialan and he became a friend and mentor from that day. His national recognition is well deserved! He will be greatly missed both personally and professionally.
