The topical topics session at the 2015 National Road Safety Conference* will include presentations on telematics, engaging with young people, and the challenge of realising the motorcycling opportunity.
Simon Rewell, road safety manager with Insure the Box, will discuss the use of telematics technology to influence safer driver behaviour.
Simon Rewell works with local authorities and the emergency services throughout the UK and Europe to help educate and support young and vulnerable drivers. He is also an active member of PACTS’ Road User Behaviour Working Party.
His presentation will examine how telematics technology can be used to influence safer driver behaviour and will cover: the challenges of young people getting insurance; how telematics insurance is being used successfully to positively influence driving behaviour
Walé Yusuff is the general manager of the SAME (Safety Awareness Mentoring Education) Academy, a driving awareness organisation for new and young motorists. He has represented the UK in the European youth road safety forum and is a member of the United Nations road safety collaboration.
Wale will use his presentation to discus the ‘importance of the right engagement with young people and road safety’. He will cover: conflicting priorities for young drivers; barriers to effective road safety delivery; using modern technology to improve road safety; and shared responsibility within peer groups.
Steve Kenward, chief executive of Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), will argue that a much larger reduction in casualties among motorcyclists is achievable, but will require a cultural shift among road safety professionals and road planners where motorcycles are concerned.
MCIA recently launched a joint policy document with the National Police Chiefs’ Council, which argues that exclusion of motorcycles in mainstream transport policy planning is indefensible as a long-term strategy. It calls for engagement with the opportunities presented by motorcycling in terms of reducing congestion, CO2 emissions, easing pressure on city centre parking and providing affordable personal transport.
Steve Kenward joined the MCIA as CEO in 2008. Before that, he held senior positions with Heron Suzuki GB and Suzuki Motor Corporation. He is a member of the Institute of the Motor Industry and a non-executive director of the commercial arm of the Women’s Institute.
