Transport secretary tweets to young drivers

Justine Greening, transport secretary, has embraced social media by calling on young drivers to share their views on how to tackle the high price of car insurance via Twitter (proponon blog).

Working in partnership with BBC Radio One’s Newsbeat, the minister called on drivers to tweet @BBCNewsbeat using the hashtag #insurance to share their views on how prices could be decreased.

The propono blog says it’s good to see the Government using new channels of communication to gather feedback from younger voters, and that it will be interesting to see how they use social media to share the findings in the future.

The news comes in the same week as the Co-op Insurance revealed that black box technology has cut crashes among young drivers by 20%.

I’d be rather more concerned that drivers were reminded not to reply if they were behind the wheel.

I might just be in a cynical mood this afternoon, but this strikes me as a complete waste of time. I can’t see that Justine Greening has any kind of power over the privately owned insurance companies, especially power over pricing of policies which is the remit of the Financial Ombudsman Service. Not forgetting that even the Financial Ombudsman Service is powerless against the European courts, such as the ban on insurance by gender.

I for one would not be happy with tax’s payer’s money being wasted with Justine Greening pretending to be trendy by “Tweeting Wid-Da yoof” !
