The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) has issued an appeal for road safety professionals and fleet managers to help with a study it is conducting into professional drivers with Type 2 diabetes.
The TRL study will look at the experiences of all UK fleet drivers who have Type 2 diabetes, and especially those with Group 2 licences for lorries or buses.
TRL is asking road safety professionals and fleet managers to encourage professional drivers with the condition to complete an online survey which has been produced by TRL on behalf of the pharmaceutical company MSD (Merck, Sharpe & Dohme). The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and drivers who do so can enter a free prize draw with a first prize of £150. All responses will be kept anonymous.
Poppy Husband, from TRL, said: “This important study is exploring how professional drivers with Type 2 diabetes manage their condition and will look at the effects of certain medications on driving.
“There are close to three million people in the UK with Type 2 diabetes and it is thought that about half a million of these drive for work, yet very little research has been carried out to support the needs of drivers with diabetes.
“We would be very grateful if road safety professionals could help by promoting awareness of the survey.”
