Schools across Cornwall have taken part in the new Twilight Trails initiative, which involves a twilight walk with a twist.
The new initiative by the county’s road safety team is a fun and informative way of teaching children the vital Be Safe Be Seen message.
Susan Evans, headteacher at Sithney CP School, who hosted the launch of the scheme, said: "We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was well managed, well thought out, relevant, positive and helpful."
The Twilight Trail started with an evening meeting of up to 25 children at the school. A brief assembly informed pupils and parents of the importance of wearing fluorescent and reflective clothing when out on the roads at night or in poor light.
Children were then taken out on the Twilight Trail which saw them walking along a dark route with nothing to show them the way but their torch and lots of reflective items concealed in hedges, trees and undergrowth.
Members of the road safety unit were on hand to explain how the torches caused the reflective material to shine, in the same way a reflector would shine when caught in a vehicle’s headlight – helping drivers to see them on the roads.
Tamsin Ferris, RSO, says: "Twilight Trails are a visual and interactive method of helping children to learn that reflective and high visibility clothing will greatly increase their visibility when out on the roads in poor light.
"We are so pleased that the Twilight Trails have gone down so well with children and parents, the feedback received has been really encouraging."
