Welsh rugby heroes help deliver road safety messages

Llanelli primary school pupils and Llanelli Scarlets’ rugby players – including Six Nations sensation George North – have been involved in the production of a magazine which aims to encourage more children to walk to school.

The magazine, ‘Over the Line’, has been produced by Room Nine Media working with Carmarthenshire County Council.

The magazine traces the journey of three friends from Ysgoi Cymraeg Brynsierfel (Brynsierfel School) as they meet Scarlets’ players and learn important road safety lessons at five different levels.

Over the Line is being distributed to schools across the county and can be used for classroom work as part of safer routes to school, walk to school, or environmental studies. Alternatively, children can simply take it home to read in their own time.

Keith Griffiths, county road safety manager, said Llanelli Scarlets were active partners in the initiative. He said: “I am delighted they were so willing to give of their time for this important walking to school safety initiative.

“Walking to school has many benefits. Not only is it good for your health and the environment, but it’s also fun and a great opportunity to help develop independence. Children will learn road safety skills which will help them with the journey to secondary school later in life.

“We are actively encouraging more children to walk to school more regularly which will lead to fitter children that are more alert and ready to learn, safer roads with fewer cars and slower speeds.”
