YDF presentation will examine the potential for safety technologies to reduce casualties among young drivers

12.00 | 8 February 2016 |

The latest confirmed speaker for Young Driver Focus 2016* will outline the characteristics of collisions involving young car drivers and consider the potential for vehicle safety systems to prevent the injuries experienced by this group.

Richard Cuerden, TRL’s chief scientist and research director, will deliver the presentation at the event in central London on 20 April.

Richard Cuerden has worked in road safety and vehicle engineering research for more than 20 years and leads a diverse portfolio of research and consultancy projects.

His work ranges from establishing European regulatory durability standards to ensure tail-pipe emissions remain within the mandated pollutant limits for the life of the vehicle, to coordinating the collection and analysis of in-depth road collision data for the DfT.

Richard has a strong track record of identifying safety design priorities based on real world evidence and has a wealth of knowledge and expertise with respect to vehicle technologies and accident and injury prevention.

In 2015, Richard’s published work included helping to draft the European Union’s eCall type-approval regulation, and quantifying how many road casualties will be prevented if minimum secondary safety standards are adopted in the world’s emerging markets.

His presentation at Young Driver Focus, ‘Young car drivers and safety technologies – what are the challenges?’, will outline the characteristics of collisions involving young car drivers in Great Britain and consider the potential for vehicle safety systems and technologies to prevent and/or mitigate the real world injuries experienced.
