Two films produced by Hounslow Council to bring home to young drivers the “devastating impact of careless driving” were launched last week on YouTube and the council’s Facebook page.
The time-lapse films tell the stories of Georgia and Alex, through their social network, as they prepare for a night out with their friends. The main characters are introduced through the information they are sharing with friends, in a way that is designed to be easy for young people to relate to.
Councillor Ed Mayne, cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services, said: “With young drivers making up a disproportionate number of those involved in accidents, we wanted to try to reach them in a way that they can relate to.
“Driving is a serious responsibility, and we want young people to remember that getting rid of the L-plates doesn’t give you a free rein to act irresponsibly, and their actions can have devastating consequences.
“These powerful films have had a great reaction so far, and we’re rolling them out to schools and colleges to use in lessons and discussions, to drive home the consequences of unsafe driving.”
