A report in The Telegraph claims that thousands of speed bumps could be removed from residential streets under Government plans to introduce 20mph zones.
The Telegraph says councils will no longer be required to have traffic calming measures, which also include chicanes and narrowed junctions, if they want to impose a 20 mph zone. Instead they will only have to put up signs telling motorists of the new lower speed limit.
In the short term the zones will be self-enforcing, although trials are underway of a new generation of average speed cameras which could be used in the 20 mph zones.
The move follows a trial in Portsmouth, the first city in Britain to introduce a 20 mph limit on all of its residential streets.
