With a little over two months to go until the second ‘European Day Without A Road Death’, TISPOL has published videos of support from across the continent, including the chair of Road Safety GB.
Project EDWARD 2017 takes place on 21 September and looks to encourage drivers, riders and pedestrians to spare an extra thought for their safety.
The awareness-raising event was created last year to ‘re-energise the reduction of fatalities and serious injuries on Europe’s roads’ – drawing attention to the 70 deaths that occur on average each day on Europe’s roads.
For the 2017 event TISPOL has set up a new pledge page where road users can promise to set a good example to passengers by driving calmly and safely, and at speeds that are legal and safe.
TISPOL is also encouraging video pledges – and last month, TISPOL’s James Luckhurst toured the UK to record video messages of support. These included:
- Sonya Hurt, chair of Road Safety GB (featured top)
- Ruth Purdie, TISPOL general secretary
- Paula Williams, chief executive, GEM
- Kevin Clinton, head of road safety, RoSPA
- Humza Yousaf, transport minister (Scotland)
During her message, Sonya Hurt said: “I’m very pleased to be here today to support Project EDWARD and work in the challenges to reduce road death and injury on our roads.
“I believe that partnership working is key – so education, engineering and enforcement.”
TISPOL’s long-term aim is to use Project EDWARD to spearhead significant and sustained reduction in death and serious injury on roads across the world.
Other new initiatives for Project EDWARD 2017 include a dedicated Twitter feed and a new website featuring a host of resources including artwork that can be downloaded free of charge.
