Foundation course given thumbs up

The Road Safety Practitioner Foundation Course has been given the thumbs up by delegates attending the latest course in London.

The foundation course delivers the basic skills, knowledge, and understanding required to deliver a road safety intervention. It provides participants with an overview of the whole process from identifying a road safety issue, to developing an intervention and through to evaluation.

The course comprises four days of tailored face-to-face learning delivered in two, two-day sessions. Between these sessions participants are required to complete an assignment relating to the topic covered in the initial session. A final assignment, which forms the final assessment, has to be completed four weeks after the second session.

The latest course is one of six being held in London between now and the end of the year, which are free to attend for people employed by a London Borough, thanks to funding provided by TfL.

One of the attendees, PC Brian McDonnell, traffic management officer for The City of Westminster and The Government Security Zone, said he was “very, very impressed with the course”.

PC McDonnell said: “I have many years experience as a police traffic officer, collision investigator and traffic management officer. The course encouraged me to look at issues in ways that I have not previously considered and has given me another tool to help lower collision rates.

“It was thought provoking, interesting and encouraged very lively debates. I would highly recommend this course to anyone that is considering it.”

Another attendee, Ben Knowles from Camden Council, said: “I found the course excellent; the trainer (Ian Edwards) was extremely knowledgeable and helped us develop our ideas, pointing out complications and pitfalls. He also gave us a whistle stop tour of behavioural psychology, including some directly applicable tools in helping educate road users.

“I’d thoroughly recommend the course to those for whom road safety is part of their job including police, road safety officers, and planners.”

Phil Crockford, from Waltham Forest Council, said he “really enjoyed” the course. He added that the “pace and content was pitched just about right”, and described Ian Edwards as “an excellent course instructor”.

As well as the dates in London, there are courses scheduled for Scotland (April/May) and the north west of England (Sept/Oct) between now and the end of 2014.

Full details of all of the dates, venues and fees, along with a booking form, can be found here.
