Webinar to ask: ‘how safe is your school transport?’

10.32 | 14 May 2025 |

Project EDWARD has announced its next webinar – How safe is your school transport? – will take place on 22 May.

Every day, millions of children travel to and from school – but how safe are their journeys? In 2024 alone, 64 children under 16 years were killed and more than 12,000 injured on UK roads, with many incidents occurring near schools.

Central to the event, which takes place between 1-2pm, will be a discussion of current issues by panellists Jamie Hassall (executive director, PACTS), Geraint Davies (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme – FORS), Robert Griffiths (Powys County Council) and Brian Watts (Drivetech).

They will explore latest law updates, practical issues around minibuses, school policies on students driving themselves and the role of local authorities.

Also on the agenda will be the relationship between schools and transport providers, trends in active travel, the role of volunteers, the value brought by codes of conduct for pupils on school transport, plus how strong policies and community action can address risks like roadside parking, speeding and inadequate crossings.

The panel members will also consider the importance of collecting and reporting collision data, near misses and feedback for ongoing safety improvements.

The webinar will be introduced by Project EDWARD’s James Luckhurst, who was keen to stress the importance of the topic.

He said: “We welcome school leaders, parents, local authority officers, transport providers and anyone with an interest in contributing to safer school journeys. Our aim in this webinar is to provide practical insights and real-world examples of replicable good practice, thanks to the wisdom and insight of our highly-experienced panellists.”
