Operation Snap “a major part” of making Warwickshire’s roads safer for cyclists and motorcyclists

As part of the ongoing national two-wheels operation, Warwickshire Police is sharing footage that members of the public have submitted via Operation Snap.

The operation, co-ordinated by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), is taking place between 2-15 June.

Its aim is to improve safety for those travelling to two wheels: cyclists and motorcyclists.

The footage released by Warwickshire Police includes that of a motorcyclist, who received three points and a fine for careless driving after passing a cyclist at 120mph.

The footage also shows a driver, who had to do a re-training course after passing two separate cyclists too close at speed near Wootton Wawen.

Drivers should allow 1.5m when passing cyclists and give even more space at higher speeds.

A third clip shows a young driver, who the partnership says was lucky to be offered a driver retraining course, after failing to look properly at a junction and narrowly missing a cyclist.

The clips can be viewed via the force’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

They are just three of 634 submissions the force has received so far this year from cyclists. Analysis shows most reports are of drivers passing riders too closely.

PC Ken Bratley, who manages Op Snap in Warwickshire, said “Thousands of road users submit footage of incidents like this to Op Snap so that we can take action to stop dangerous driving.

“Operation Snap plays a major part in making Warwickshire’s roads safer, and we thank all those who have already submitted evidence for us to review.”
