NRSC 2025: Speed Dating shaping up nicely

First introduced at NRSC 2018 in Brighton, Speed Dating – which comprises a series of quick-fire (5-min) presentations – has become one of the most popular sessions at National Conference.

National Road Safety Conference (NRSC) is Road Safety GB’s flagship event. For the past two years, it has attracted almost 400 attendees and has sold out.

NRSC 2025 is being held at Wyboston Lakes Resort, located adjacent to the A1 between Cambridge and Milton Keynes. It is being hosted by Road Safety GB Eastern Region and is co-sponsored by National Highways, Jenoptik and Westcotec.

For NRSC 2025, more than 280 people have already registered to attend, and the conference committee received around 100 submissions from people wanting to speak at conference. In addition, 22 organisations have already signed up to exhibit at the event.

Speed dating comprises a series of quick-fire presentations (5-mins) showcasing schemes, interventions and other initiatives being developed and implemented by road safety practitioners from across the UK.

The NRSC 2025 Speed Dating session currently comprises the following presentations:

Getting the message across to young people using Theatre-in-Education
Leon Hamilton, Artistic Director, Wizard Theatre
This presentation describes how for the last 25 years the TIE company, Wizard Theatre, has delivered quality shows and workshops for Primary School children, and gives delegates information about the programmes that can be put into their local schools.

Biker Down!
Claire Harris, Road Safety Manager, Kent Fire and Rescue Service
Biker Down! is a free programme, predominantly aimed at bikers and delivered across the UK mainly by Fire and Rescue Services (and other blue light colleagues). The Biker Down! team is in the process of implementing some changes to Biker Down!, which will be shared in this presentation.

From Chaos to Clarity: Instant Incident Reporting That Powers Smarter Risk Decisions
Renee Rogers, Founder, ONO

School Forensic Collision Investigation Workshop

This presentation will focus on a new workshop which has only been delivered to a small number of primary schools within Powys, with very positive feedback. It is aimed at year 6 pupils and involves a 90-minute classroom-based lesson on forensic collision investigation.

Driving Innovation: Connected Vehicle Technology for Safer Roads

This presentation will share the results of a highly successful demonstration of connected vehicle technology that is available now to senior DfT policy makers. This cutting-edge innovation showcased three product types, seamlessly delivering real-time, real-world alerts to drivers through a user-friendly Android mapping-based application, available for download on the app store.

Influencing Safer Vehicles at a Local Level
Sharon Hilton, Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership
Over the past three years, the Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership has worked to understand the local population’s awareness of vehicle safety features and maintenance, with the aim to create initiatives that effectively influence these aspects. Through this work, it has become evident that further education is needed regarding NCAP ratings, the importance of frequent maintenance, and the role of in-car safety features.

Road Safety GB Academy Accreditation Framework

A learning framework for road safety practitioners has been developed by the Road Safety GB Academy. This presentation covers the learning requirements and the process for attaining the awards.

Learn2Live: journeying beyond fear appeal in young driver education
Annabelle Priest, Devon & Somerset FRS and National Fire Chiefs Council Young Driver Thematic Lead
Learn2Live is a young driver/passenger education partnership that has been running for 16 years. Acting on research recommendations, Learn2Live transitioned from using fear appeals to one that utilises behavioural science to educate in a trauma-informed manner. A randomised cluster trial of the new intervention has demonstrated significant positive outcomes.

Road Safety GB ADI Register – supporting older driver scheme providers

Road Safety GB has created an online national register of ADIs who have completed the Ageing Driver Training course, delivered by RSGB Academy. The purpose of the register is to support local authorities and national older driver scheme providers. The register is helpfully grouped by Road Safety GB region.

There is capacity for 14 presentations as part of Speed Dating, with 11 currently confirmed. Anyone interested in pitching for one of the three vacant slots should contact Nick Rawlings by email.
