Supporting mature drivers in Lancashire

Authorities in Lancashire have produced new resources to educate and engage with older and mature drivers on the issue of eyesight and driving.

Developed by Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Constabulary, after engagement with medical professional groups, the resources are being made available in GP surgeries and libraries across the county.

The resources include display screen information and leaflets, as well as a Powerpoint presentation.

The number of drivers over the age of 70 years increased by over 50% between 2014 and 2024 – and continues to increase by approximately quarter of a million drivers each year.

The increase in drivers is also illustrated by the proportion of those aged over 70 years with a driving licence. In 1975, the figure stood at 15% – compared to 73% in 2023.

Lancashire County Council says it is seeing an increasing number of fatal and serious injury collisions on the county’s roads where eyesight loss is named as the main contributory factor.

To further educate mature drivers, the council also runs ‘Travel for Life’ training courses.

Travel for Life is a short presentation aimed at Lancashire residents aged 50 years plus, which offers advice on how to stay safe as a driver or pedestrian.

Topics include keeping all road users safe, causes of road casualties in Lancashire, vehicle safety, how alcohol, drugs and medication can affect ability to drive and alternatives to driving.
