Lilian Greenwood MP in shock return to DfT

Just days after being moved from the position of future of roads minister, Lilian Greenwood MP has returned to the DfT.

Earlier this month, Ms Greenwood announced her change from the DfT to the Whips’ office, where she was to serve as vice-chamberlain of HM Household (Government whip).

However, Ms Greenwood has now been made a transport minister, under the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State. She will also continue to hold the post of Junior Lord of the Treasury.

Speaking on social media, Ms Greenwood said: “Delighted to be reappointed to the DfT in a new role as transport minister.

“Chuffed to also be continuing my work in the whips team as we continue to drive forward this Labour Government’s agenda and work to rebuild a transport system Britain can rely on.”

The MP for Nottingham South was first appointed future of roads minister in July 2024, following the General Election.

Her work has included a significant increase in funding to repair roads and fill potholes during 2025/26 – as well as working on the highly-anticipated Road Safety Strategy, due for publication later this year.

In November 2024, Ms Greenwood became the first minister to deliver an in-person presentation at the National Road Safety Conference, organised by Road Safety GB.

Ms Greenwood’s return to the DfT will be welcome news for the road safety industry, given her understanding of the subject, developed during a three-year stint as chair of the Transport Committee. Ms Greenwood also spent a year as shadow transport secretary.
