BLT Driver Training has launched a new Mature Drivers Confidence Builder Course, designed to help older motorists review their driving, rebuild confidence and continue driving safely for longer.
The course has been developed with support from Rob Heard MBE, chair of the Older Drivers Forum and a director of Blue Lamp Trust (Services) Ltd.
The launch follows the publication of the Department for Transport’s new Road Safety Strategy earlier this year, which highlighted the importance of supporting people to remain safe and mobile as they age.
BLT Driver Training says that, as people live and remain mobile for longer, there is an increasing need to help mature drivers recognise changes in confidence, refresh their skills and access appropriate guidance.
The organisation says its approach is focused on positive support, helping people maintain their independence and continue driving safely for as long as they are able, rather than waiting until concerns become serious enough for stopping driving to become the main discussion.
The Mature Drivers Confidence Builder is intended for drivers who want to review their current driving, rebuild confidence behind the wheel or gain reassurance about their skills.
For many mature drivers, their original driving test was taken several decades ago. Since then, roads, vehicle technology, driving environments and the Highway Code have changed considerably. At the same time, confidence and driving ability can naturally change with age.
The course is not a test and is not intended to determine whether someone should stop driving. Instead, it provides a relaxed and supportive opportunity to review current driving in a non-judgemental environment.
Each session is:
- Delivered one-to-one by a specially trained DVSA Approved Driving Instructor
- Approximately 60 minutes long
- Conducted in the driver’s own vehicle
- Tailored to the driver’s concerns and areas they would like to focus on
- Followed by a written report and access to a post-course training video
The aim is to improve awareness, build confidence and identify any areas where further support may be beneficial, helping mature drivers to continue driving more safely for longer.
The Mature Drivers Confidence Builder is currently available across Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Cambridgeshire, Surrey, the West Midlands, Hertfordshire, Greater Manchester, Durham, Cumbria, Essex and Buckinghamshire.
BLT Driver Training operates on a not-for-profit basis, with income generated through its training services helping to support the work of its charity arm, The Blue Lamp Trust.
