09.32 | 28 August 2009 |

Hundreds of thousands of young motorists are driving on the roads illegally because they do not have any insurance, according to the BBC’s Newsbeat programme.

The programme says it has seen new figures showing that more than one in five 17 to 20-year-olds is not covered by insurance.

According to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, which represents insurance companies, this means there are 243,000 illegal young drivers, which equates to one in every 20 cars nationally.
