More than 1,000 children and adults got on their bikes for one of the biggest school cycling events in the country.
The fourth Big Bike Day was held at Catterick Garrison, in North Yorkshire. It was organised by six local schools, backed by British Cycling, and sponsored by North Yorkshire County Council.
The aim was to encourage children to use their bicycles, but also for parents and carers to leave their cars at home and have fun on their bikes while cycling safely.
Grahame Shepherd, headteacher of Le Cateau School (one of the schools that took part), said: “The Big Bike Day is a real boost for the school and the pupils; it promotes our healthy schools initiative and creates a huge amount of interest among the children.
“A lot of pupils cycle already because of the large number of cycle routes around Catterick, but we want more of them to get involved.
“Not only does it help them keep fit, it’s safer in that it reduces the number of cars around the school. We hope the Big Bike Day really encourages them to get on their bikes more often.”
North Yorkshire County Councillor Gareth Dadd, executive member for road safety, said: “Events such as this encourage pupils to get on their bikes, particularly at this time of the year when we’re coming into spring. Cycling offers so much and to encourage it at this stage can build a lifelong interest. That is why the county council is pleased to be involved.”
