James Butlin, principal highways safety engineer, Highways & Transport at Northamptonshire County Council, has sadly died after a serious illness.

James passed away on 29 January while being treated at Northampton General Hospital.

James had been actively involved in road safety within Northamptonshire since he joined the authority in 2000 and was a regular participant in the Midlands Service Improvement Group (Casualty Reduction). He had also delivered numerous road safety presentations around the UK as well as making a major contribution to the Northamptonshire Casualty Reduction Strategy.

James was a serving Inspector with Northamptonshire Police Special Constabulary and committed many hours of his time to public service. He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues and our sympathies are extended to his family.

I knew James from the Steam Rally Field. He had a voice that everyone could recognise and that moment you heard it through the speakers, you knew it was James. He was always up for a laugh at the rallies and he always found time to talk to you. The last conversation I had with him was a month or so before he died. He’d rung me to ask about selling his Series III Land rover and he wanted someone in the know to sell it too. I didn’t know anyone at the time to put him in touch with that may have wanted a Land Rover. I told him to send me some details over and I would advertise it for him on the Series II club forum, but I heard nothing back and then found out that he’d died…
    Rest in peace old buddy.

I happen to know James from the day both of us started working together with NCC Casualty Reduction Team. I have always found James as a stable, cool headed , considerate professional.

I only had to ask and he was always willing to listen, and private conversations with James would remain private. James has left a memory of his character, subtle sense of humour, and he was the one who was able to unravel the intricacies of legal and data documents and his suggestions of useful additions, amendments will be greatly missed.

To me and my family the suddenness of his passing away was a great shock, and he did hold a great affinity towards my family. He would always welcome my wife’s Indian food for his meals, and someone who always cared and asked about my daughters well being.

James has gone, leaving behind a void and will definitely be missed on personal basis.

So very sad to hear this news. I worked with James a few years ago, he was kind, gentle, helpful and very well respected amongst his colleagues. I am sure he will be sadly missed by those who knew and worked with him. My thoughts are with his family and close friends at this very sad time. RIP
