School minibus caught ignoring level crossing warning lights
New cameras at a level crossing in West Sussex have caught 150 drivers ignoring the red warning lights in just two months – including a school minibus and a bus. (BBC News)
The crossing at Yapton, near Barnham has about 7,000 cars and 300 trains passing through it every day.

Newcastle University announces schedule of road safety courses for 2018
Newcastle University has published details of three courses, taking place during spring 2018, that will provide delegates with a full appreciation of the road safety situation in the UK and globally.
The courses set the context and the application of appropriate casualty prevention and reduction techniques, including data interpretation from accident and record analysis.
The courses also deliver insights into the developments and changes in the application of casualty reduction measures and road safety audit actions.
The spring 2018 courses in road safety are:
- Road Safety Policy
26-27 February 2018 - Collision Prevention and Reduction
28 February – 1 March 2018 - Road Safety Audits
1-2 March 2018

First council orders ‘Kiddie Shaped’ road safety signs
Halton Borough Council has become the first local authority to order ‘Kiddie Shaped’ road safety signs.
The ‘Kiddie Shaped’ sign, produced by Signs2Schools, are designed to help address the problem of unsafe parking and driving in and around school entrances.
The signs are available in a number of formats, with the option to include a lollipop message stick. The most popular messages include ‘think before you park’, ‘don’t park on the zig zags’, ‘caution children’ and ‘slow down’.
The signs are already in use at a number of schools across the country including Sheringham Primary School in Newham, London, and St. Andrew’s CE Primary School in Accrington, Lancashire.
Halton Borough Council has ordered 10 of the signs.
Michelle Simpson, Halton Borough Council, said: "We have major problems in our area with residents and school parking, due to both the congestion of traffic and also inconsiderate drivers.
“We are going to loan the signs out to local schools for a period of time, and then swap them to other schools, hoping that they will help combat the problems and help to keep children safe.”
