Assessment of Walked Routes to School Guidelines updated

10.37 | 5 January 2026 |

Road Safety GB has published an updated version of its Assessment of Walked Routes to School Guidelines.

The guidelines are to help officers carry out assessments on walked routes to school where the journey is below the statutory distance.

The assessments are normally required where it is claimed that the route is not safe and therefore the Local Authority should provide free transport.

These guidelines were originally published by Road Safety GB in 2012 and have most recently been updated in November 2025.

James Gibson, executive director of Road Safety GB, said: “The new updates have been relatively small but help to improve consistency and aid clarity within the document.

“There are no changes to the caselaw section. The updates have been worked on by a small group of officers. I really appreciate the help received from those with hands-on experience with this work.”

The guidelines are available for Road Safety GB members to access via the members’ area of its website.

Road Safety GB wishes to thank the following officers for their assistance with these updates:

  • Joe Allen, Dorset Council
  • Rob Camp, Dorset Council
  • Sam Pitwell, West Sussex County Council
