Don’t let ‘ghost plates’ haunt the roads this Halloween

As the nights draw in and Halloween approaches, safety technology specialist Redspeed International is issuing a timely reminder for drivers to keep road safety at the top of their minds – and their numberplates fully visible.

While fancy dress and disguises might be fun for trick-or-treating, disguising a numberplate is no laughing matter. The company behind some of the UK’s most advanced traffic enforcement technologies is taking an innovative stance against the growing menace of illegal ‘ghost plates’.

Redspeed’s latest innovation, the Sentio Ghost camera system, is capable of detecting vehicles fitted with manipulated or illegal plates designed to evade police ANPR systems.

Following the success of Operation Phantom, a ground-breaking pilot with West Midlands Police that uncovered over 4,300 illegal plate uses in Birmingham in just two weeks, the technology has exposed the scale of law evasion on British roads.

Tom Duckham, CEO of Redspeed International, said: “Ghost plates might sound supernatural, but the dangers they create are all too real.

“These plates make vehicles effectively invisible to enforcement, allowing high-risk drivers and criminal offenders to operate without accountability. However, our technology is exposing them, and in doing so is helping to ensure safer streets and communities.”

Redspeed’s warning to offenders aligns with its long-standing mission of protecting communities all year round. The company works closely with police forces across the country to support life-saving initiatives aimed at reducing road casualties, tackling vehicle-enabled crime and building trust through technological transparency.

“Redspeed has always been committed to safeguarding communities,” added Tom Duckham.

“As Halloween approaches, it’s worth reminding everyone that some of the real frighteners on our roads come not from ghosts and ghouls – but from those trying to vanish from view with illegal plates.”
